Bismarck, past and present, has had no shortage of hotels. With the importance of Bismarck brought frequent travelers from all walks of life. Many of them were prominent businessmen and people tied to political life. The first hotel in Bismarck was opened by Dr. Walter Burleigh, one of the first settlers. The luxurious Hotel Sheridan opened in 1877, and was later renamed Northwest Hotel. The Pacific Hotel opened in July 1880, and was replaced by the Grand Pacific Hotel in 1906. The famous McKenzie Hotel opened its doors on January 1, 1911, followed by the Van Horn Hotel in 1916. Both hotels were located in downtown Bismarck and well-known for their luxurious accommodations.
Edward Patterson, who owned the Northwest Hotel, purchased the McKenzie Hotel and later renamed it Patterson Hotel in 1922. The Patterson Hotel would become well known for not only its luxury, but also as a powerhouse for politicians and businessmen alike, and was the headquarters for the Nonpartisan League.
The nationally renowned Holiday Inn hotel opened in 1962 along Memorial Highway near the Missouri River. The Bismarck Holiday Inn was one of the most successful hotels to bear the name, winning multiple distinguished awards during its golden years, until becoming a major source of criminal activity, from drug dealing to assault, and eventually closing in 2002.
Today, Bismarck is home to almost every major hotel chain, with hundreds of hotel rooms ranging from budget to luxury.
