The Bismarck School Board announced tonight that the new elementary school currently undergoing construction will be called “Sunrise Elementary”. The name was chosen out of 310 possible suggestions presented to the board and carries on the district’s current tradition of not naming its facilities after people.
Sunrise is the first of at least two planned elementary schools to open over the course of the next few years to alleviate overcrowding at such schools as Rita Murphy and Northridge, which has begun using space at nearby Corpus Christi Church.
Opening Fall 2010, Sunrise Elementary will be the district’s first new school since Horizon Middle School opened in January 2001, and the first elementary school built in twenty years.
Bismarck Public Schools is the state’s largest school district, and like the city itself has seen substantial growth over the past couple years. The school district also recently completed major renovation of Simle Middle School and is now in the beginning stages of planning the city’s third public high school.
Sunrise will be Bismarck Public School’s 16th elementary school when completed.
