Buttrey’s was a regional retail chain based in Great Falls, Montana that had operated two distinctly separate retail divisions: a grocery store division (Buttrey Food & Drug) and a department store division that primarily focused on ladies fashions (Buttrey Suburban). The company was founded in Havre, Montana in 1896.
Buttrey’s had operated one of its department stores in Bismarck for decades before shuttering sometime in the late 1970s-early 1980s. The Bismarck store first opened on Main Avenue in 1931, and relocated to the southwest corner of 4th Street & Broadway Avenue ten years later. It once again relocated one block to the north, within the Hoskins Block, before closing. Records indicate that Buttrey’s at one time also had a store in Mandan.
Bismarck Pride has been unable to confirm a lot of information regarding the store’s history, including when it officially closed. If you have any information regarding this matter, please contact BismarckPride.com.
