Kirkwood Motor Inn was the original name given to the hotel that is now known as Ramkota Hotel, which opened in 1974 directly across from Kirkwood Mall. Upon opening, Kirkwood Motor Inn became a chief competitor to Bismarck’s nationally renowned Holiday Inn, aiding to the Holiday Inn’s eventual demise. At the time of its opening, Kirkwood Motor Inn had the largest banquet hall in Bismarck.
Kirkwood Motor Inn was one of four area hotels to face major financial problems during the mid 1980s, ending in its foreclosure in 1987. The hotel was put up for auction in 1988, and in turn became Radisson Inn. Today, it is known as Ramkota Hotel.
Paul C. Wachter of the prominent Wachter Family, who also owned Kirkwood Plaza at the time, was the hotel’s majority owner until its foreclosure.
The Four Seasons Cafe is located within the hotel.
