The Bismarck Civic Center is a 10,100-capacity public venue that hosts such things as seminars, concerts, and sporting events. It is also home to the Dakota Wizards Basketball Team.
The Civic Center was built in 1969 on land partially donated by the Wachter Family, who were in the early stages of developing the adjacent Kirkwood Mall at the time.
Expansion Plans
An effort is currently being made to further expand the Civic Center, with an estimated cost of $26 million. Part of the expansion includes the addition of a parking garage and a 16-story Candad Inn hotel. A 1% sales tax increase has been proposed by Mayor Warford to help fund the expansion, however as of May 2010 all plans are currently on hold, due largely to the recession and overall opposition of the proposal.
