| State Street near the I-94 Interchange. |
Kmart, the city's first modern-day discount store, was one of the first major businesses to open along the corridor in October 1971. The opening of Kmart help ignite rapid development nearby. Dan's Supervalu opened its State Street location in 1975, and Gateway Mall opened four years later, both greatly assisting in the corridor's rapid growth.
Development along the corridor slowed during the 1990s, at which time the zone ended roughly at Century Avenue - with little development north of the road. Menards was one of the first major retailers to open north of Century Avenue, followed shortly by Dan's Supermarket, both of which relocated from Gateway Mall. Wal-Mart constructed a new super center in 2005, sparking development further north on the corridor.
The State Street Corridor is also home to the city's largest concentration of hotels and motels, with a total of 13 located in or near the corridor. There are also numerous restaurants located along the corridor, from fast food to sit-down.
